Romans 8:37
King James Version
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
What is a conqueror? To answer this question, we must look at the root word “conquer.” According to the Merriam Dictionary to conquer, means, to gain or acquire by force of arms: to gain mastery over or win by overcoming obstacles or opposition; to overcome by mental or moral power. Strong’s Concordance defines “to conquer” in the Greek as to overcome or prevail (https://biblehub.com/greek/3528.htm).
If we look in the scriptures, we find that not only He (God) tells us that we are fighting a spiritual battle, but who we are fighting, our weapons, and the final outcome. He (God) gives all this, so we know who we are.
First, we must identify who we are going to conquer. We are fighting Satan known in scripture as many names, but for this writing we refer to him as “The Dragon (Revelation 12),(8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:) and so we are tricked into thinking he helps us, God describes one of his disguises in 2 Corinthians 11:14, King James Version,14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.)
Now that we know the “who, we can identify our weapons to fight the enemy. We have the armor of God with includes the Sword of the Spirit, the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the helmet of salvation sword of the spirit, (Ephesians 6:13-17). According to Gotquestions.com, “the shield” is vitally important to a soldier. It provides a blanket of protection. It is meant to be taken up in all circumstances. It is the first barrier against the enemy’s attack”. This same protection is discussed when David states in Psalm 28:7 “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.”
According to Matthew Henry’s Commentary, in this verse, indicates that the second half of this psalm is a thanksgiving and declaring who God is as a celebration of having the victory in Christ. (https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/matthew-henry/Ps.28.6-Ps.28.9).
According to an article written by Dr. Bob Beltz, author, Pastor at Highline Community Church, there are five purposes of the shield of faith:
Purpose #1: the shield is the first line of defense
Purpose # 2: guards
Purpose # 3: deflects the fiery darts from the enemy
Purpose #4: incapacitate the enemy.
Purpose 5: when stand together in prayer these shiel ds can create a spiritual wall as we fight together (https://abadvisors.com/spiritual-warfare-part-iv-the-shield-of-faith/).
As noted above, we know already know the finale.
A final point to address is the final result of faith. As a believer, is we win the war. When Jesus died on the cross, the eternal price was paid. When He resurrected, He conquered the grave, and took the keys of death hell giving eternal life to those who believed (https://www.gotquestions.org/Jesus-Christ-conquered-death.html). This eternal life isa spiritual eternal life, not a physical one (https://www.gotquestions.org/Jesus-Christ-conquered-death.html). In this, we become conquers.
According to Paul, we can be MORE THAN that. The phrase “more than” puts us at a higher level than even any known conqueror as it is defined in Merriam Webster’s as “to a great degree: very : extremely” (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/more%20than).
To be more than a conquerors means we face the trials of life with the certainty that we are not alone. We have a mighty Father who fights for us. We approach the hardest of times knowing God is on our side, and that He will walk with us through toughest of times. We have the assurance that we have an everlasting life in His presence. (https://www.gotquestions.org/more-than-conquerors.html).
If you would like to join God’s army and be a conqueror, I would like to invite you to the join me in repeating this simple prayer, God can see the sincerity of your heart and once you feel Him move in your heart you will want to find a church and tell them what you did:
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner.
I believe that Jesus Christ, Your Son, died on the cross for my sin and rose from the dead to be my Lord. God, now I repent of my sin and personally invite Jesus into my life. Thank you, Jesus, for giving me the free gift of eternal life. I promise to live for You as You reveal yourself to me through Your Word, the Bible.
In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
